This cereal word search fills a bowl from the cereal aisle: flakes, puffs, loops and clusters, Cheerios, Wheaties, Trix and Grape Nuts, the mascot on the box, the prize inside, and the soggy last spoonful.
Battle Creek, Michigan became the cereal capital because of a health resort. C.W. Post had been a patient at the Kellogg brothers' sanitarium there, and in 1897 he started selling his own cereal, Grape-Nuts. It contains neither grapes nor nuts: Post thought the baked wheat and barley nuggets tasted nutty and believed they held grape sugar. Within a few years dozens of cereal companies had opened in the same town.
Some of the names have long stories. Cheerios came out in 1941 as CheeriOats and dropped the oats from its name in 1945. Wheaties has called itself the Breakfast of Champions since the 1930s and began putting athletes on the box in 1934, with the baseball star Lou Gehrig among the first. Snap, Crackle and Pop, the three elves on the Rice Krispies box, were first drawn in the early 1930s to match the sound the cereal makes when the milk goes in.
