The easter egg on this list has a specific origin and a grievance behind it. Atari refused to credit its programmers in the 1970s, so Warren Robinett hid a room in Adventure containing the words "Created by Warren Robinett", reachable only by carrying an invisible one-pixel object to the right wall. Atari found out after he had left, decided it was cheaper to keep it than to recall the cartridges, and the practice got a name.

Speedrun is the newest habit here and the most organized. Players compete to finish a game as fast as possible under agreed rules, verify each other's recordings frame by frame, and have between them found bugs that developers never knew existed; the whole thing now funds charity marathons that raise millions a year.
