Spelling Word Search
This spelling word search hides forty words that people misspell most often: necessary, separate, definitely, embarrass, rhythm, weird, receive, February, Wednesday and, fittingly, misspell itself.
Most of them trip people up for a reason. "I before e except after c" covers believe, piece and ceiling, then breaks on weird, seize, leisure and foreign. February has a first r that many speakers skip, Wednesday keeps the d from Woden's day, and knight still carries a k and a gh that were spoken aloud in Middle English. Rhythm gets by with no vowel but y.
American and British spellings split mostly because of Noah Webster. His American Dictionary of the English Language of 1828 dropped the u from words like honour and neighbour and turned theatre into theater. The national spelling bee that Scripps now runs began in 1925 with nine finalists in Washington, and Frank Neuhauser, eleven years old, won it by spelling gladiolus.
