CVC Words Word Search

This CVC words puzzle holds forty three letter words built consonant, vowel, consonant, eight for each short vowel: cab and ham, beg and vet, lid and wig, fog and hog, cub and mug.

CVC words are usually the first words a child decodes alone, because each letter makes its plain sound and the vowel is short. Teachers build chains by changing one sound at a time: hug becomes hut, hut becomes nut, nut becomes net. Words with x are left off many lists, because the x in box says two sounds, k and s. In yes the y is a consonant; at the end of a word like my it turns into a vowel.

A common tool for these words is a row of three boxes, one per sound. A child pushes a counter into a box for each sound heard, then writes the letters underneath. The boxes are named for Daniil Elkonin, a Soviet psychologist who designed them in the 1960s to help children hear the separate sounds in a word before they could read it.
