Spanish Holidays Word Search
The holidays of the Spanish-speaking world in Spanish: Navidad and Nochebuena, Año Nuevo and the Reyes Magos, Semana Santa and Carnaval, the Día de Muertos and the nine nights of Posadas before Christmas.
Christmas in Spain and much of Latin America runs past December 25 to January 6, the day of the Three Kings. Children leave their shoes out the night before, and families share a rosca, a ring of sweet bread with a small figure baked inside; in Mexico whoever finds it hosts the tamales on February 2, the Candelaria. At midnight on New Year's Eve, Spaniards eat twelve uvas, one for each chime of the clock, a custom that took hold in the early 1900s.
The Día de Muertos, on November 1 and 2, welcomes the dead home for a visit. Families build an ofrenda with photos, food and orange cempasúchil, the marigold whose color and scent are said to guide the spirits. Cinco de Mayo is not Mexican Independence Day, which is September 16; it marks the Battle of Puebla in 1862, when a Mexican army beat a larger French one.
