This Ninja Turtles word search holds forty names from the sewers of New York: Leonardo, Donatello, Raphael and Michelangelo, their teacher Splinter, April and Casey Jones, the Shredder and the Foot Clan, and a slice of pizza.
Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird made the first comic themselves in 1984, a black-and-white book from their own small company, Mirage Studios. It began as a joke on the serious comics of the day. In Daredevil, a canister of radioactive waste blinds the young hero; in the Turtles' story, the same kind of canister lands on four baby turtles and a rat. Even Splinter's name pokes at Stick, the old man who trains Daredevil.
The four brothers are named after Italian Renaissance artists. In the first comics they all wore red masks, and the colors that tell them apart came with the cartoon in 1987: blue for Leonardo with his two katana swords, purple for Donatello and his bo staff, red for Raphael and his sai, orange for Michelangelo with his nunchucks. The shout of Cowabunga is older than the turtles; it was used on the Howdy Doody show in the 1950s and was picked up by surfers.
