Victorian homes kept a front parlor for guests, Sunday visits and laying out the dead before a funeral. In the early 1900s, as funerals moved to the undertaker's own parlor, magazines and home builders urged families to use that room every day and call it the living room. The older drawing room was a withdrawing room, where guests withdrew after dinner.
The ottoman is named for the Ottoman Empire, where low cushioned seating ran along the walls of a room; the style reached Europe in the late 1700s. The television changed the room fast: fewer than one in ten American homes had a set in 1950, and close to nine in ten did by 1960, with the sofa turned to face it.
