Forty things found around the house: the attic and the basement, the porch and the garage, the washer and dryer, the vacuum, the broom and the mop, and the thermostat on the hallway wall.
Several of these words are older than the things they name today. Window comes from the Old Norse vindauga, wind eye, a hole in the roof or wall that let smoke out and air in. Garage is French, from garer, to shelter, and came into English around 1900 with the first cars. An attic is named for a low top story on classical buildings, a style linked to Attica, the region around Athens.
The first powered vacuum cleaner, built in London by Hubert Cecil Booth in 1901, was so large it rode through the streets on a horse-drawn cart while its hoses snaked into the house. In 1907 James Spangler, an Ohio janitor, built a light upright model and sold the patent to his cousin's husband, William Hoover, whose name became the British word for the machine.
