Homophones Word Search

This homophones word search pairs forty words that sound the same but differ in spelling and meaning: bear and bare, flower and flour, write and right, steal and steel, and principal and principle.

The word comes from Greek homo, same, and phone, sound. Homophones are one kind of homonym; their cousins, homographs, share a spelling but not always a sound, like the bow of a ship and the bow on a present. Spell checkers miss homophone mistakes because every word is spelled correctly, which is why weather for whether and allowed for aloud slip through so often.

Some pairs were once a single word. Flour is the flower of the meal, its finest part, and English printed either spelling for both until flour settled into its own in the 1800s. Teachers keep memory tricks for the hard pairs: the principal is your pal, while a principle is a rule, and stationery with an e is the kind you put in an envelope.
