Martin Cooper of Motorola made the first public call from a handheld cell phone on April 3, 1973, standing on a New York street and dialing a rival engineer at Bell Labs. His prototype weighed about two and a half pounds. The phone is called cellular because a region is split into small areas called cells, each with its own tower and antenna, and a call is handed from tower to tower as you move. Outside your own carrier's towers the phone borrows another network, which is called roaming.
The first text message was sent on December 3, 1992, by the engineer Neil Papworth from a computer to a phone in Britain, and it said Merry Christmas. Emoji came from Japan in 1999, when Shigetaka Kurita drew a set of 176 small pictures for the mobile company NTT Docomo. The word joins the Japanese e, picture, and moji, character, so its likeness to the English word emotion is a coincidence.
