The season's English name is newer than the season. Until about the 1500s the months between winter and summer were called Lent, or springing time for what the plants were doing; the shortened form won, and the old name kept only its church meaning. Autumn went through the same change a little later, which is why fall and autumn still compete.

Two entries have unexpectedly large histories. The tulip set off what is often called the first speculative bubble, in the Netherlands in the 1630s, when single bulbs briefly changed hands for the price of a house. And Easter moves because it is tied to the sky - the first Sunday after the first full moon on or after the spring equinox - which is why it lands anywhere from late March to late April.
