The apostrophe sits where it does on purpose. Anna Jarvis, who started the American holiday after her own mother died and saw it made official in 1914, insisted on Mother's rather than Mothers: each family honoring its own mother rather than mothers in general. She also chose the white carnation, because it had been her mother's favorite flower.

She then spent the rest of her life trying to stop it. Within ten years she was denouncing florists and greeting-card companies for turning the day into a selling season, suing organizations that used the name, and she was once arrested at a protest against it. Britain's Mothering Sunday is a separate and older observance fixed to the fourth Sunday in Lent, which is why the two dates rarely line up.
