Nearly all of them are Italian because Italy ran music printing and opera when the vocabulary settled, through the 1600s and 1700s, and the markings travelled with the sheet music. Most are plain words doing a plain job: allegro means cheerful rather than fast, adagio means at ease, forte means strong, and staccato and legato mean detached and tied.

Two carry old arguments. A cadenza was the passage where the soloist stopped the orchestra and improvised, and composers began writing them out only when they stopped trusting players to do it well. Baroque came from the Portuguese word for a misshapen pearl, and it started life as an insult about music that critics thought was overdecorated.
